You Are Not Confused About Nutrition. You Are Over-Informed.
There has probably never been a time when people knew more about nutrition.
Protein targets. Glucose spikes. Insulin. Seed oils. Ultra-processed foods. Meal timing. Gut health. Fasting windows. Artificial sweeteners. Cortisol. Supplements.
And yet eating seems to have become increasingly complicated.
Someone can know what their blood sugar is doing after breakfast, worry about whether their protein powder contains the right sweetener, avoid eating too late because of longevity advice and hesitate before having a banana because they have heard that fruit contains too much sugar.
This is not necessarily confusion.
It is information without hierarchy.
Nutrition information is rarely entirely invented. Fruit does contain sugar. Eating carbohydrates does increase blood glucose. Food processing exists on a spectrum. Protein is important. Meal composition can influence satiety.
The problem begins when an isolated fact is presented without context and treated as though it should determine the entire decision.
Fruit contains naturally occurring sugars, but it also provides fibre, water, vitamins, minerals and other beneficial compounds. For most people, eating an apple, berries or a mango is not the nutritional problem that needs solving. Yet once "sugar" has been labelled as something to fear, the distinction between fruit and confectionery can quietly disappear.
The same happens throughout nutrition.
A person begins asking whether a particular ingredient is optimal before asking whether the overall diet contains enough vegetables, protein, fibre and energy.
They worry about the precise timing of carbohydrates while regularly skipping meals.
They debate artificial sweeteners while struggling to maintain an eating pattern that actually works for them.
They optimise details before establishing foundations.
More information does not automatically create better decisions. Sometimes it simply creates more variables to manage.
What is missing is a hierarchy of importance.
Some things matter enormously. Eating enough nutritious food. Getting sufficient protein. Eating plants. Having enough fibre. Matching overall energy intake reasonably well to individual needs and goals.
Other things may matter in certain circumstances, but considerably less.
And some things are interesting without being particularly useful.
Strategic nutrition means knowing the difference.
A useful nutrition system should reduce unnecessary decisions, not generate new ones. It should help someone walk into a supermarket and recognise dozens of perfectly reasonable choices rather than inspect every product for evidence that it might secretly be harmful.
The goal is not nutritional ignorance. Good information matters.
But knowledge becomes valuable only when it improves judgement.
Perhaps the next time another food, ingredient or nutrient is declared problematic, the first question should not be, "Is this true?"
It should be:
How much does this actually matter?
